Bridging the Gap between Academic and Clinical Practice

Overview

The clinical simulation laboratory represents a state of art facility that encourages students to engage in an exceptional clinical education experience in safe, realistic and effective environment.

The CSL provides learners the opportunity to lean and practice health care provider competencies in a simulated and controlled environment. The lab provides an effective space where learners are able to explore elements of health care while learning to provide safe and comprehensive patient care.

Mission Statement

It will facilitate various clinical simulations activities to enhance the clinical skills and critical thinking abilities of nursing students through education, research, evaluation and innovation and set the standard for evidence based practice, thereby improving patient safety and the quality of care.

Vision Statement

Its vision is to produce confident and expert clinical practitioners with enhanced critical thinking abilities in the field of Nursing in Saudi Arabian context.

Goals

The CSL aims to educate nursing students / health care professionals at all levels by:

  • Developing quality simulation education programs based on sound educational theory, thus reducing the gap between theory and practice.
  • Enhancing and promoting patient safety and quality health care by integrating simulation within the health sciences curriculum.
  • Providing students the opportunity to learn in a risk free environment and practice to mastery of skills.
  • Improving the competency, confidence and attitude of our students’ clinical skills through realistic repetitive practices.
  • Providing opportunity for self-reflection through debriefing sessions to improve critical thinking skills and thus improve patient care.
  • Producing research and publications in the fields of Nursing simulation and patient safety.

Layout

The clinical simulation laboratory (CSL) is located on second floor of the College of Nursing building. The clinical simulation laboratory simulates a hospital setting that is fully equipped to practice all relevant clinical skills.

A total of 12 lab rooms are available for educational activities. These rooms are organized according to the student’s learning requirement by specialty. Each lab room is a replica of the clinical teaching unit of the hospital.

Policies and guidelines

For effective function and coordination of clinical skills and simulation lab, policies and guidelines are in place. These are available to the users of the CSL.

These polices guide:

  • The booking and conducting of skills sessions
  • Practices sessions and assessment sessions User behavior in lab area
  • Procurement of necessary supplies and management and maintenance

Activities

  • Skill Sessions are either scheduled for or booked by learner.

  • Simulation Sessions

    • Simulation is an attempt at replicating reality in a controlled setting. In healthcare education, simulation tries to replicate some or nearly all of the essential aspects of a clinical situation so that the situation may be more readily understood and managed when it occurs for real in clinical practice. The simulation lab environment allows students to participate in life-like situations.

    • Simulation scenarios are created as close as possible to real-life experiences for students in a safe environment that is conducive for developing critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and clinical judgment skills. It allows students to make errors in a controlled setting. Practicing in such an environment will increase the probability that those skills will be used in the real-world setting.

  • OSCEs

    • Formative and summative clinical assessments are done through OSCEs.

Business Hours

The Clinical simulation laboratory is open 0800-1700hrs, five days a week and is primarily used for scheduled skills sessions, simulation sessions and other student support sessions.
